SmartMoney establishes holistic village-wide electronic money ecosystems tailored to the diverse and interconnected financial needs of farmers, households, merchants, schools, agriculture companies, NGOs and other rural institutions.

SmartMoney pioneers several important mobile finance innovations that have expanded the company’s service offering from a basic payment solution for agriculture companies into a fully inclusive financial ecosystem for rural communities that we proudly call “E-Village.” E-Village addresses key savings and local payment needs of rural economic stakeholders including rural households, farmers, small rural businesses, rural merchants and large rural institutions (agriculture companies, schools, NGOs).

The underlying foundation of E-Village is a sales, training and servicing model that has been iterated and tested in the field for the past four years and is now ready to be scaled. Today, SmartMoney services more than 100,000 rural people and merchants and is opening an astonishing 750 new customer accounts per day in only 2 districts. Expansion to additional districts in Uganda is already underway.

Throughout 2015, SmartMoney has turned the vision of the large scale digitization of rural cash transactions into reality. SmartMoney customers can purchase goods such as salt, sugar and sodas at more than 2,000 rural merchants across Uganda and Tanzania. Recent customer research confirms SmartMoney’s unique ability to drive adoption for low value payments. More than 20% of SmartMoney’s rural customers make digital payments for goods and services in their daily lives. This compares to less than 2% having ever used conventional mobile money or bank transfers to buy goods and services, and only 1% having used conventional mobile money to buy goods other than airtime.
